Help Us Secure Hazel’s Bright Future!
Hazel’s journey with GRRoM began on October 31, 2024, when she was found on the side of the road in Flint, MI. After two weeks in the shelter, she was surrendered to us by Genesee County Animal Control. They called her Sweetie—a name that matched her gentle spirit. But our GRRoM family came together and renamed her Hazel, a beautiful name for a beautiful soul.
Hazel’s Journey to Healing
When Hazel arrived in our care, it was clear she had endured years of neglect. Estimated to be around 4 years old and a Golden Retriever/Shar Pei mix, she was suffering from:
Conjunctivitis in both eyes due to entropion
Severe ear infections—especially in her left ear, where chronic infections caused calcification
A painful skin infection with significant hair loss
A urinary tract infection and intestinal worms
Malnutrition, leaving her dangerously underweight
The Journey Continues
Thanks to her incredible foster mom, Layla, Hazel has received round-the-clock love and medical care—everything from medicated baths and a special diet to post-surgical recovery support and endless snuggles. Under Layla’s care, Hazel has truly blossomed.
Even with all this progress, Hazel still faces several medical challenges:
Hip Dysplasia: Hazel was recently diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia in both hips. Though she’s currently full of energy and joy, she may eventually need double hip replacement surgery—an expensive procedure estimated at $5,000–$7,000 per hip as of this publication.
Chronic Ear Infections: Hazel continues to battle severe infections in her left ear. Her vet and the specialists at MSU believe the best long-term solution is a Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy (TECABO) surgery. This specialized procedure could help her live pain-free, and may be done alongside her second entropion (eye) surgery to minimize anesthesia and recovery times.
Urinary Issues: Hazel has also been experiencing urine leakage. A recent ultrasound at MSU revealed that while her ureters are correctly emptying into her bladder, they are not connected in the typical location, and her bladder is positioned deeper in her pelvis than normal. The current plan is to trial a higher dose of Proin to support her sphincter function. If this doesn’t improve her condition, the next steps may include hormone therapy and a scope to investigate further.
Additional Infections: Hazel was recently diagnosed with a new skin infection around her vulva and continues treatment with antibiotics, along with a new ear medication to manage the ongoing infections in her left ear.
