Susie's Second Chance: A Story of Resilience, Healing, and Hope

Some dogs leave an imprint on your heart the moment you meet them.

Susie is one of those dogs.

This sweet 11-year-old Golden Retriever mix has endured more change in the last few months than any dog should have to face. In March 2026, Susie lost the owner she had loved for years. As her world changed overnight, her health began to decline as well.

When Susie came into the care of a family friend named Carole, she weighed just 38 pounds. She was severely underweight, had extensive hair loss, and struggled with relentless itching caused by unmanaged skin issues. Yet despite everything she had been through, Susie still had something special.

She still had hope.

Carole saw that hope and chose to fight for her.

Through countless hours of care, veterinary visits, and tremendous dedication, Carole helped give Susie the chance she deserved. She personally invested in Susie's care, including specialty evaluations through Michigan State University, and never stopped believing that this senior girl could recover.

And recover she has.

Today, Susie weighs approximately 53 pounds and continues to work toward a healthy weight. Her coat is growing back, her skin is improving, and her itching is far better controlled. Most importantly, her personality is beginning to shine.

She loves attention. She adores snuggling. She delights in treat puzzles and toys. Every day she shows us more of the affectionate, joyful dog that was hiding beneath months of discomfort and uncertainty.

While Susie has made incredible progress, her journey is not over. To continue thriving, she requires a specialized prescription diet, daily medications, weekly treatments, medicated baths, and regular veterinary monitoring. Her ongoing care costs approximately $300 each month.

For many dogs, this level of care would be difficult to sustain without the support of a rescue community.

That's where you come in to help us raise $2,500 towards Susie’s care.

Every donation to GRRoM's 26 for 26 Fundraiser helps ensure that dogs like Susie receive the care they need, not just to survive, but to truly heal. Every contribution helps provide medication, prescription food, veterinary visits, and ongoing treatment that allow dogs to enjoy the quality of life they deserve.

Susie has already proven what is possible when a dog is given proper medical care, patience, and love. Now she is looking toward the future with renewed health, renewed confidence, and the promise of brighter days ahead.

We are incredibly grateful to Carole for stepping in when Susie needed someone most. Her compassion quite literally changed the course of this dog's life.

As Susie prepares for the next chapter of her journey, we hope you'll join us in celebrating just how far she has come.

From 38 pounds and struggling to a thriving, affectionate senior girl with a sparkle in her eye, Susie reminds us that it is never too late for a second chance.

Thank you for helping us make stories like hers possible.

With gratitude,

Golden Retriever Rescue of Michigan
