About:
Duke is a loyal, goofy, gentleman. He is a big sweetheart that loves everyone and loves to keep you company, play with balls, and swim. When swimming in Lake Michigan he needs a long rope to bring him back to shore for fear of his heading to Wisconsin! Sometimes he is even happily entertained playing ball all by himself. Duke is trustworthy when given free rein of the house even for up to 8 hours and does not use a crate. He knows many basic commands and learns quickly. He responds wonderfully to positive reinforcement training and has picked up many new commands in foster care including "trade" when you want him to give up something for something else. Also useful when he'd rather you chase him to get his ball. Duke walks nicely on a slack leash at your side, and when distracted, he can be guided back to heel with a gentle tug and the command "no." He has shown some resource guarding around his food dish but does well if given privacy during mealtime. He lived congenially with a cat in his previous home. He has not had a lot of interaction with other dogs but those that he has had have all been positive. Due to his food guarding behavior, we recommend providing separate and private feeding times if another dog is in the house. A physical fence would be ideal but is not required. Other forms of containment will be considered. Children should be dog savvy and over the age of 10. Positive reinforcement obedience training is always recommended, but not required, dependent on the level of experience of an adopter.
