Step by Step Guide to Fostering or Adopting with GRRoM

Please click the + to expand each section to learn more.

Thank you for your interest in fostering a Golden Retriever from the Golden Retriever Rescue of Michigan (GRRoM).

We have outlined a step by step guide about how our process works.

  • Complete the foster/adopt application‍ ‍and Foster Contract if fostering. We also require a copy of the page of your home owner’s insurance policy showing your liability coverage as well as a photocopy of proof of payment of the application fee detailed in Step 2.

Once you’ve gathered these required forms, please email them to our Application Team Lead: Katy Davis (kmdpnp@aol.com).

  • A $26 non-refundable application fee must be submitted to GRRoM’s Treasurer, Cheryl French, either online via Zelle or by mailing a check.

Zelle Instructions: Payment to Cheryl French using her email goldenzoe59@gmail.com.

Please put your name in the memo as well as “for GRRoM application fee”).

Check Instructions: Payable to GRRoM mailed to Cheryl French at 39235 Drake St., Clinton Twp MI 48036.

For proof of payment for our application team, please include a screen shot of your payment with your documents or email separately to kmdpnp@aol.com.

  • Once we receive your documents, we will assign an experienced volunteer to do your home visit at a mutually agreeable time. The home visitor then sends their report to the applications team and an approval letter is written and sent to you.

  • The Applications Team files your paperwork. If you are approved for fostering, our team will send you an invitation from operations@GRRoM to join our software platform called groups.io.

When you click on “Accept,” this means all of your documents go into our “Approved Fosters” file and you will begin getting emails from our intake team when a dog is being surrendered and available for Fostering.

If approved for adoption, you will not receive these emails and instead you will work with your home visitor on matching you with an adoptable Golden. Please note: many of our fosters decide to adopt their foster placements which is why most of our applicants sign up as a foster home.

  • As an approved foster home, you are welcomed to read each email from our intake team, see if the dog fits with your family, and respond to the email at the bottom ASAP if the answer is “yes.”

You are never obligated to take a dog, it is always your choice. GRRoM will never “make” you take a dog. If there are numerous approved fosters that voice interest in a dog, our intake team tries to match the needs of the dog with the foster’s home and life situation.

You could possibly not respond for a month or a year, but you would continue to get emails until “your dog” appears.

  • If you are chosen as a particular dog’s foster, our transport team will pick the dog up at the surrendering family and bring the dog to you. These dogs often have anxiety, even when coming from a good family, and will need patience and much love and attention at first.

We must rely on the surrendering family or facility for information about the dog, so if there are problems at first, our team is here for you to assist in any way that you need.

  • After 2-3 weeks in foster care, it will be time for you to indicate if you would like to adopt your foster dog. (during the foster period GRRoM pays for any necessary medical care).

Fosters get first right to adopt their foster dog, but if for some reason the dog is not a good fit or life circumstances are not compatible with you adopting, the dog will be put on the adoption roster. This roster is sent out to our home visitor volunteers who will share these adoptable Goldens with the families they have interviewed.

If your dog goes on the adoption roster, you would interview persons interested in the dog from our approved adopter list, and you would get to choose the best family.

  • If you choose to adopt your foster dog or a dog from our adoptable roster, the only additional paperwork we need is for you to sign the adoption contract and pay the adoption fee.

Your dog has now found their forever home!

  • Please let us know if you need any assistance filling out the forms or if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks again for considering to foster or adopt a GRRoM Golden! We are grateful for your interest and look forward to your response.

GRRoM always appreciates good fosters for our foster care program to help Golden Retrievers who need evaluation and TLC prior to adoption.

    With Golden Gratitude,

    Kathleen Davis (Katy)
